Bond denied for N. Charleston woman charged in fatal stabbing

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A judge denied bond Thursday morning for a 19-year-old woman charged in the death of her 22-year-old boyfriend.

North Charleston police charged Akara Edwards with murder and possession of knife during the commission of a violent crime. Edwards turned herself in to investigators Wednesday night.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 22-year-old Alex Whipple. Officials say the Charleston resident died as a result of a stab wound.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday, NCPD officers responded to a home on the 2300 block of Kent Street in reference to a woman reporting that she stabbed her boyfriend. Officers say they arrived to find Edwards on top of her boyfriend, applying pressure to the left center of his torso where he was stabbed.

The woman told investigators that the incident began when her boyfriend arrived at the home, and she refused to come outside.

According to the woman, her boyfriend became irate and started damaging a vehicle in the yard while armed with a hammer. The woman said she left her home with a knife and told her boyfriend to leave.

The woman reportedly told investigators that after her boyfriend allegedly threw the hammer down, he charged at her during which time he was struck in the chest with the knife.

Whipple was pronounced dead at the scene.
