In his newly released book Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied Gilbert Ohanian Examines His Experiences Being Bullied in School

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Aug. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The long term effects of being bullied in school are finally being taken seriously, but the solutions are hard to come by.  We know how being victimized by bullies can do lifelong damage, and schools are working to develop comprehensive approaches.  In the meantime, however, students are still suffering and parents still have good reason to worry about their children's wellbeing.  Those grappling with the issues – teachers, parents, experts – can all benefit from the voice we don't hear nearly enough of – the voice of someone who has been bullied.  Gilbert Ohanian's newly launched book Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied offers the insights no parent or teacher can afford to ignore.

Too often children are too afraid and upset to really explain what is happening and how they feel when they are being bullied.  This makes solving the problem and helping the child recover so much harder.  Chestnuts gives parents the bullied child's perspective with mature insight and reflection.  Bullying is becoming increasingly intense and vicious these days, and young bullies have social media as a new weapon to terrorize from afar.  Parents need to have a handle on the dynamics of bullying before it happens to their children.

Tackling the Tough Questions

Why do some children bully others?  All children will have disagreements and occasionally say or do cruel or aggressive things, but those isolated mistakes are part of learning to get along.  They aren't bullying; they aren't long running campaigns of intimidation, ridicule and terror targeting specific children.  Bullying is not something all or most children do, so what is it that makes some children do it?  And why are some children particularly vulnerable to being bullied?  More importantly, what can they do to avoid being targeted?  How can parents and teachers really help?

Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied tackles those tough questions by examining the author's own personal experience as a child who was bullied.  Ohanian gained enormous insight from his experience and in Chestnuts he offers keen insight not only into children who have been bullied but also those who bully others.  To tackle the increasingly serious problem of bullying, parents, teachers and other professionals who work with children need to develop greater insight – insight they cannot always get from young people who are too close to the experience to see it clearly and too immature to understand all of the dynamics.

Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied by Gilbert Ohanian is available in print and Kindle version.
