A child bitten by a shark on Folly Beach has been taken to the hospital for treatment, Folly Beach police confirmed.
The victim, a 10 or 11-year-old boy, was bitten on the right leg and foot by what he described as a four or five-foot-long shark, according to Folly Beach Public Safety Fire Chief Steve Mims.
Mims said the boy had been on a boogie board about 30 yards off shore near the 1300 block of East Ashley Road in shallow water when the bite happened.
A witness told Live 5 News a child came running out of the water with a friend screaming that he had been bitten and was immediately attended to, but that no one saw a shark or a fin in the water.
Mims said the boy suffered lacerations that will require sutures but are not considered life threatening.
