DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Monday night, the Dorchester County Council voted to raise the budget for the new jail $5 million.
The budget for the jail was $18 million dollars and the county planned to pay for it using a 2012 bond issue. Now the budget is $23.5 million.
The difference will be paid for with a $4 million bond and a $1.4 million lease agreement.
After bids for the project came back higher than expected and already spending more than $1 million on the land for the new detention center, the project is more than $4 million over budget. The construction bid was awarded to HG Reynolds Company.
County Sheriff LC Knight said a new jail is needed because the current one in St. George is old and overcrowded. The new one would be around 80,000 square feet and hold around 330 inmates.
If the project stays on track, it should be completed in two years.
