Palmetto Goodwill to offer free shredding, e-waste disposal

If you have old computers and accessories you no longer need, or old papers you've been hesitant to discard for fear they would end up in the wrong hands, mark your calendars for Saturday.

Palmetto Goodwill is holding an e-waste roundup and shredding event on Saturday at Computer Works, at 6813 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston, from 9 a.m. until noon.

The free event, according to Palmetto Goodwill, will allow people to donate and recycle computers and accessories, plus shred personal documents to guard against identity theft. Donors will receive a 10 percent discount at Computer Works for their computers.

New government regulations have made it increasingly difficult to recycle computers and other electronics, Palmetto Goodwill spokesperson Rebecca Collett said.

When the organization receives a donated computer, technicians wipe the hard drive completely before refurbishing it and offering it for resale. Computers that cannot be refurbished are entered into the Dell Reconnect program, which retrieves usable spare parts and recycles the remainder following regulations.

Goodwill job training and placement programs benefit from the resale of donated computers and accessories, the organization says.
