ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

New renovations are expected soon at the airport in Albertville to aid in keeping a safe place for the planes of local and visiting pilots. It's expensive that's for sure, but that's all part of keeping up an airport that wants to continue to grow.

The Albertville Airport is celebrating its 50 anniversary in 2014. Now with the help of a grant, they're looking to rehabilitate the tarmac which is the area where aircraft is parked. This will come at a cost of nearly $600,000.

Airport officials said it's very much needed as there is cracking in the asphalt and it's more than 20-years-old. The renovations will also include a concrete pad to go under the fueling trucks to prevent fuel from hitting the asphalt which causes damage.

“Over 85 percent of the traffic at Albertville's airport is commercial and we have, I believe, five or six commercial jets that are stored at our airport facilities,” said Albertville City Council President Nathan Broadhurst. “So it's very important to make sure that those stay in good condition because it is an attractive airport for people to use in the corporate world.”

The city council is expected to open the bids when they meet Monday night. Project construction is expected to begin around October 1.
