New school year kicks off across the Lowcountry

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

More than 800 students came to Joseph R. Pye Elementary school Monday morning, kicking off the 2014-2015 school year.

Joseph R. Pye is one of the twelve elementary schools in the Dorchester District 2 school district. DD2 is just one district in the Lowcountry that kicked off the school year Monday.

The new year brought new students, teachers and learning methods to Joseph R. Pye Elementary.

Sarah Brown, a 5th grade teacher, said she's been preparing all summer for the S.T.E.A.M. learning initiative.

"That is: Science, Technology Engineering Arts and Math," said Sarah Brown. "So, we've done a lot of lessons to incorporate those to bring it to life for our students."

The average class size at Joseph R. Pye Elementary is 24 students for all grades except first grade, which has an average class size is 18 students.
