Man accused of shooting at driver during road rage incident in Ravenel

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 55-year-old Florida man accused of shooting at another driver during a road rage incident Wednesday morning.

Investigators charged Curtis Ray Whitehurst of St. Petersburg, Fla. with two counts of first-degree assault and battery.

At 8 a.m., deputies responded to the Sunoco gas station on Highway 17 in Ravenel to investigate a road rage incident where a gun was fired.

According to the sheriff's office, a Ford Ranger was traveling north on Highway 17 when a semi-truck approached the Ranger from behind.

A report states the truck intentionally struck the Ranger on its side while traveling in the same direction.

Investigators say the truck driver then fired a round into the Ranger's back drivers side bumper. The Ranger pulled over at the Sunoco gas station and the driver called authorities.

In addition, authorities say the driver of the truck stopped his vehicle near the victim, got out and fired another round into the air.

Whitehurst will be locked up at the Al Cannon Detention Center, and he's expected in court for a bond hearing Thursday morning.
