Fisher House to help veteran families coming to Charleston

Charleston, SC (AP) -

The families of thousands of veterans from coastal South Carolina and Georgia can be near their loved ones receiving VA medical care without having to pay pricey Charleston hotel rates.

Local leaders announced Tuesday plans to build a Fisher House near the Ralph Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston. There are 64 Fisher Houses in the United States and Germany where the families of vets can stay free of charge.

The Charleston medical center serves more than 4,500 in-patient veterans each year from Myrtle Beach to Savannah.

A lot in the city's historic district has been purchased with the help of the national Fisher House Foundation. Now $3.5 million must be raised to pay off the debt, deed the property to the VA and begin construction.
