'Powdery substance' in Liberty Square determined safe

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An "unknown powdery substance" found in a downtown Charleston park Wednesday morning has been identified as starch or corn meal, according to Charleston Fire Department Officials.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ryan Kunitzer says HAZMAT units and Charleston police were called to Liberty Square near Calhoun and Concord Streets after the substance was discovered.

As a precautionary measure, Kunitzer says crews blocked off an area of the park while attempting to identify the substance, which was later determined to be starch or corn meal.

Crews have cleared the scene.
