Santee Cooper warns of telephone scam targeting businesses

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Santee Cooper says someone is calling businesses pretending to be a representative of the company and is demanding immediate payment of bills.

The scammer has asked for credit card payments of bills and wire transfers, according to Santee Cooper spokesperson Susan Mungo. The caller even leaves a callback number that is answered by someone who claims to be with Santee Cooper.

So far, the businesses being targeted are in the Horry County area, Mungo said.

"Santee Cooper will not call and threaten to turn a customer's power off unless payment is immediately made or demand immediate payment over the phone," Mungo said in a statement.

"In general, customers should never provide a social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone, online or in person, unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking," the statement reads.

Customers who have concerns and want to verify someone they are speaking with is a Santee Cooper employee should call (843) 347-3399 in Horry County or Georgetown Counties or (843) 761-8000 in Berkeley County.
