NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Wednesday night, the public got its first look at Charleston County's new plan to help traffic in the Ladson and North Charleston area.
The county is planning to build an interchange for I-26 between Ashley Phosphate Road and Highway 78. The goal is to help ease traffic in those three areas and push more people onto Palmetto Commerce Parkway.
Construction has already started on a project to extend Northside Drive, which runs parallel to I-26 up from Ashley Phosphate to Ladson Road. The interchange project would connect the interstate with the new Northside Drive and Future Drive. Future Drive intersects Northside Drive and connects to Palmetto Commerce Parkway.
At Wednesday night's meeting, the public wasn't allowed to make statements but they could give written suggestions and talk to the project's staff members.
The project is expected to cost $50 million with construction planned to begin November 2016.
