CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County Sheriff's Office has announced information on the funeral service of Deputy Sheriff Joseph Matuskovic.

A visitation will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, located at 2501 Bees Ferry Road on Sunday, September 14 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The deputy's funeral service will take place at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, located at 5 Saint Teresa Drive on Savannah Highway, on Monday, September 15 beginning at 10 a.m.

Immediately following the service, Matuskovic will be laid to rest at the Old Saint Andrews Parrish Church, located at 2604 Ashley River Road.

Deputy Matuskovic, 43, was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance call Monday around 7:30 p.m. at the Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex. He was transported to MUSC, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m.

Investigators say Matuskovic was one of five deputies attempting to make contact with the suspect, 38-year-old Michael Oswald. As the deputies approached Oswald's apartment, the suspect reportedly fired shots through the door, striking Matuskovic and Deputy Michael Ackerman. Ackerman was also transported to MUSC, where he underwent successful surgery for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Oswald was later found dead inside the apartment, ending a nine hour standoff. It is unclear whether Oswald died as a result of return fire from the deputies or the result of a self-inflicted wound.

"A good man gave his life in the service of the community tonight," said Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas of the sheriff's office late Monday night.

Matuskovic was hired by the sheriff's office in 2011. Prior to that, from 1997 to 2011, he worked with the Charleston Police Department, Lucas said.
