GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC/WMBF) - A body found at Browns Ferry Boat Landing in Georgetown County Thursday afternoon has been identified as a 58-year-old Mt. Pleasant man.
Georgetown County Coroner Kenneth M. Johnson says the remains of Leland Victor Leith were located in a wooded area near the boat landing around 2:45 p.m. The case is still under investigation, and an autopsy will be performed at MUSC, officials say.
According to Georgetown County spokeswoman Carrie Cuthbertson, people found the body, but by the time authorities arrived those people had left.
The coroner's office states the body has advanced decomposition, but the remains were not skeletal.
SCDNR agents turned the investigation over to officials with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.
The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office was on scene for over three hours along with Emergency Services.
