CCSO: 12 students transported to hospital following school bus accident

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office says 12 James Island Charter High School students were transported to the hospital following a school bus accident on James Island Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, at 3:58 p.m., deputies responded to Dills Bluff and Winborn Drive on James Island to investigate an accident involving a car and a Durham School Bus.

According to deputies, the school bus was traveling on Dills Bluff when a car entered the intersection without stopping and struck the school bus on the driver's side.

CCSO officials say emergency Medical Services arrived on scene to evaluate the students.

According to Major Eric Watson, there were 31 students on the school bus at the time of the accident.

Watson says a total of 12 students were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina and to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Authorities say the school bus was traveling from James Island Charter High School.

This accident is under investigation by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
