Officials: Large building damaged in Nucor Berkeley Plant blaze

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze at Nucor Berkeley Plant Thursday night that significantly damaged one building.

Cainhoy Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at Nucor Berkeley Plant, located at 1455 Hagan Avenue, around 8:31 p.m. Officials say Units arrived to find a conveyor system on the exterior of a large mill building on fire, with flames going into the building.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Goodwin says the building was evacuated, and crews were able to knock down the bulk of the fire within 45 minutes. The fire was placed under control at 10:19 p.m.

Goodwin says firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings or hazardous materials areas.

Officials say crews remained on the scene for four hours to extinguish hotspots.

No one was injured in the fire.

Cainhoy Fire Department was assisted by City of Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, and Cordesville Rural Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
