Benefit dinner set for Charleston Co. deputies Matuskovic, Ackerman

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A benefit dinner to honor two Charleston County deputies who were wounded, one fatally, while in the line of duty is set for Friday night.

The Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge #3 is teaming up with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office to host a benefit dinner for the family of Deputy Joseph Matuskovic and Deputy Michael Ackerman from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

All proceeds from the dinner will go into funds established by the Fraternal Order of Police for the deputies; The Deputy Joe Fund will be divided equally into three trust funds for Matuskovic's children, while the Deputy Mike Fund will help Ackerman immediately.

On the night of September 8, deputies were responding to reports of a disturbance at the Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex. Deputies say the suspect, Michael Oswald, fired shots from an AK-47 through his apartment door, striking both Deputy Matuskovic and Deputy Ackerman.

Deputy Matuskovic was pronounced dead at MUSC. Deputy Ackerman, who was shot in the leg, underwent successful surgery at MUSC and is on the path to recovery.

Oswald was reportedly found dead inside his apartment as a result of return fire from deputies.

Tickets for the benefit are $10, and includes a meal, drink, and dessert. The event will also include a silent auction.

St. Joseph Catholic Church is located at 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd in West Ashley.
