Charleston police trainee charged with driving under the influence

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Authorities say a 27-year-old Charleston Police Department trainee was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

CPD officials say Wesley Bird of Columbia was arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol this past Saturday in Columbia.

Police say at the time, the trainee was in his personal vehicle and was assigned to the South Carolina Justice Academy.

Officials with Charleston police say Bird is on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to the CPD, Bird joined the department on June 30 of this year, and reported to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in August for 12 weeks of training.
