Officials: Mt. Pleasant fire boat crashed while responding to call

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mt. Pleasant Fire Department boat will remain docked for the immediate future after reportedly hitting another boat's anchor while responding to a call early Thursday morning.

Fire Chief Herbert Williams says a fire boat docked at Hilton Marine Harbor was going to assist a call for a possible jumper off the Wando Bridge around 12:30 a.m. when it collided with the anchor of another boat.

Williams says the fire boat suffered minor damage to the side of the boat, as well a window on the door of the cab. The other boat was not damaged.

According to the fire chief, the boat is still operational, but it will be out of service while the insurance company looks into the incident.

The collision was the result of operator error, as well as a navigational issue, Williams says. The 5 crew members on board were drug tested, but Williams says the results are not yet available.

The incident is being investigated to determine if disciplinary action is warranted, the fire chief said.

The boat was not able to provide assistance in the search for the possible jumper due to the accident.
