COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The man convicted of the 1988 murder of his girlfriend in Colleton County was denied parole on Wednesday morning.

Rodney McLeod, 44, is serving a life sentence for the 1988 murder of Debra Jenkins. Authorities say McLeod kidnapped Jenkins from her home in the Neyles community and took her to Beaufort County, where he beat her with a car jack, backed over her with her car and left the woman to die.

Deputies found the body of Jenkins 28 days later.

McLeod is eligible for parole every two years by state law. Jenkins' family said on Tuesday they would fight against parole for McLeod.

The penalty of life without parole in South Carolina did not exist at the time of his conviction.
