SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Sullivan's Island Mayor Michael Perkis died on Tuesday at the age of 70.
A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon at J. Henry Stuhr Inc. in Mount Pleasant. According to an obituary, Perkis was elected Mayor of Sullivan's Island in 2013 after serving on Town Council for eight years.
Isle of Palms council members said Perkis died early Tuesday morning.
He led by creating consensus, respecting the voices of those who disagreed, always representing the best interests of the island that he loved so much,” Sullivan's Island Mayor Pro-Tem Jerry Kaynard said in a statement. “He led by example. He taught us about honesty and integrity. He was my good friend. It was a privilege to serve with him on town council.”
"Mike was a wonderful guy, upbeat, smart, determined, and fiercely devoted to his family, his friends, and his community," said Sullivan's Island Councilman Patrick O'Neil in a statement Tuesday night."I am so privileged to have served with him on Sullivan's Island Town Council for his eight years as a Councilmember and his tragically short term as Mayor. For all the cynics who despair of finding good people for public service, Mike's record is cause for hope. He showed that there still are honest, concerned, and dedicated people willing to go to bat for what is right, with concern only for their community and not for their self-interest. I will miss working with him, and will especially miss having him as a friend."
A tweet by the City of Isle of Palms read,"The City of Isle of Palms extends heartfelt sympathy to our neighbors on Sullivan's Island in the loss of Michael Perkis,"
