New MUSC president talks about putting patients first

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - MUSC officially has a new president. Dr. David Cole was installed as the university's seventh president Thursday afternoon.

Cole is MUSC's former chairman of the Department of Surgery.

"It's a humbling opportunity for me," Cole said in an interview after the ceremony.

Cole was praised by faculty members, alumni, even by the student government association which played a part in selecting the new president.

A common theme of Cole's inaugural speech was putting patients first.

"The challenge/opportunity is for us to transition who and how we take care of patients," he said.

The new president says with less funding being pumped into the medical care industry, providing that care will be a challenge.

"We have to become more efficient in how he provide care. We have to look to that. Better quality means better outcomes, means less waste."

Cole succeeds Dr. Ray Greenberg, who left MUSC for a job with the University of Texas hospital system.
