CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The demolition process for the Sergeant Jasper Apartments starts this week.
Monday, crews put up fencing around the complex. This week, crews will start taking out the mechanical systems inside the building, but none of the structural demolition will begin until Broad Street market moves out in February.
In March, crews will demolish the first level commercial section, and then the put up scaffolding around the building and dismantle the apartments floor by floor from the top down.
The last of the building's roughly 300 residents moved out late this fall. The low-rent high-rise turned 64 years old this year.
The whole demolition project is expected to take a year and be completed by late 2015.
