CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police Department has announced they will begin enforcing a new bicycle parking ordinance along King Street in December.

The ordinance, which goes in to effect December 1, will prohibit bicyclists from locking their bikes to street trees, street lights, stop signs, meters, and other legal objects on the sidewalk of King Street between Calhoun and Market Streets.

Officials say the now prohibited parking resulted in safety hazards for pedestrians.

Those who are in violation of the ordinance will have their bike removed and transported to the Charleston Police Department, where it will be available for pickup following the payment of a $45 storage fee.

Bicyclists are asked to use the more than 80 public bike parking spaces that have been installed along King Street.
