COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The state Department of Transportation will replace a Colleton County bridge rated as structurally deficient beginning in late October, leading to a temporary 4.8 mile detour for motorists.
The replacement project is scheduled to begin on Oct. 29, and the new bridge will reopen to traffic by approximately Jan. 8, 2015, according to SCDOT Construction Engineer Kevin Turner.
The proposed detour route during the construction will require motorists to use Road Oak Road, Bazzle Road, Rehoboth Road and Timber Bay Drive.
The project to replace the bridge, located along Red Oak Road over the Sand Run Creek, qualifies for Federal Bridge Replacement Funding because of its rating, according to SCDOT.
A bridge rated as "structurally deficient" is considered being in relatively poor physical condition and/or inadequate to handle truck weight.
