5 SC governor candidates meet in final debate

GREENVILLE, SC (AP) - The two major challengers to South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley used the final debate between the candidates to hammer her on the state's child welfare agency and her lack of support for a law to take guns away from people convicted of criminal domestic violence.

Independent candidate Tom Ervin said Tuesday that he decided to run because of Haley's poor handling of the Department of Social Services. He says she stood by while an incompetent leader of the agency let children be abused and killed because of poor management.

Democrat Vincent Sheheen says convicted abusers should never have guns. Haley did not support a ban during the debate.

The debate at Furman University was the second and final one. Libertarian Steve French and United Citizens candidate Morgan Reeves were included.
