COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - The South Carolina National Guard says that for the first time since it began sending men and women overseas after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, all of its combat units are back home.
Brig. Gen. R. Van McCarty says the latest returnees are members of a military police company from Edgefield. They are due home this weekend after a deployment in Afghanistan.
McCarty says various units have been deployed to combat areas for more than a decade. Sixteen service members have lost their lives during those deployments.
The Guard estimates there have been 18,000 deployments made by individual soldiers and airmen since 2002.
He says many of its 11,000 members have deployed two or three times.
