Beaufort County preps for busy election day

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - Officials are expecting a larger turnout than normal for the midterm elections.

The elections office was busy prepping the poll workers all last week so they have all the materials they need for the big day on Tuesday. They made sure the electronic poll machines were working and ready to go, and they contacted all of the county's precincts locations to make sure they were ready as well.

On Monday, elections officials will be double checking things again. They want the day to go off without any problems.

"It's very busy. We work from the time we get here, around 7 in the morning, until 8 or 9 at night. It's not hard, it's just a steady flow because we are also receiving absentee voters in the office. It gets kind of busy," said Marie Small, Director of Beaufort County Board of Elections.

There are a couple big state races voters in the Lowcountry will be deciding on Tuesday, but there's a local races that has caught a lot of attention, and that's the Hilton Head Island mayoral race.

There are five candidates running and election officials say a runoff is possible.

The candidates are, Rochelle Williams, Incumbent Mayor Drew Laughlin, Joseph Dubois, David Bennett, and Roger James.

Also, this race is about the issues for some residents, which are the new land management ordinance, public transportation, and all of the redevelopments going on around the area.

For those who can't make it out to vote on Tuesday, they have until the end of the day Monday to cast an in-person absentee ballot.

The elections office is open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
