BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County residents voted Tuesday to extend the one-cent transportation sales tax.
The Berkeley County Election Commission reported a 27,797 to 13,543 vote in favor of extending the tax, which took effect in 2008. The decision, which must be certified later this week, will extend the tax through April, 2023 or until $230 million is collected, whichever comes first.
The funds from this tax are used solely for financing transportation needs like highways, road, streets and bridges. Since 2008, the tax has generated $95 million.
Some of the larger scale projects are the second phase 2 the widening of Clements Ferry Road and improvements to the interchange at Highways 52 and 176 in Goose Greek.
