CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police arrested a 40-year-old Summerville man on Wednesday in connection with robbery and assault at a West Ashley store.
Alfred Eugene Slaughter is charged with strong armed robbery and assault and battery first degree, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
Police say Slaughter entered the West Ashley Walmart on Sunday at approximately 3:45 p.m. and placed almost $500 in motor oil and DVDs into a shopping cart, then went to the lawn and garden center where employees asked him to show a receipt for the items.
Employees told police Slaughter ignored them and took the items into the parking lot.
An employee followed him into the parking lot and asked again for a receipt, and Slaughter punched the employee in the face, knocking him to the ground, police say.
The incident report states when the employee approached him again, the man put his keys in-between his fingers and made an action like he was going to use the keys to strike the victim but did not. Police say Slaughter pushed the shopping cart at the employee and then got into his vehicle and left the parking lot without the merchandise.
The investigation is ongoing.
Slaughter was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
