NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Residents in North Charleston sounded off Wednesday night on a proposed plan for a new major road project in the county.
The Palmetto Commerce Parkway project has been in the works for years and is now in its final phase which would connect Ladson Road with Aviation Avenue.
The project is designed to help cut down on traffic on Rivers Avenue, Dorchester Road and I-26, but neighbors at Wednesday's meeting had concerns over the noise from the new road and the fact the project will likely mean some homes have to be destroyed.
"I know it's good jobs," Jeannette Craparotta, who lives in the Midland Park area said. "We welcome that, but we don't want a road that's going to tear our community apart and not provide us easy access to get around. We were there first."
Both the mayor and North Charleston council member Rhonda Jerome say they would not vote for a project that would force many people to be displaced.
The county is currently looking at a few different plans. It intends to pick one in the fall of next year.
