ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a man was fatally shot during an argument over an electricity bill in Orangeburg County.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office arrested 69-year-old George William Hughes who is charged with murder.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said Hughes called law enforcement to a home on Cobb Drive on Thursday at 10 a.m. after he said he had shot someone.
When deputies arrived, Hughes said that he and the victim were arguing over the payment of an electricity bill.
According to Hughes, the victim skipped out of the bill when he moved from a home that Hughes owned to a residence on Cobb Drive.
Hughes told investigators that when the victim pulled a knife and threatened to end his life, Hughes returned fire. A report states Hughes shot the victim up to four times.
