WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC/AP) - Colleton County deputies say one person was wounded Tuesday in a shooting in broad daylight that sent a family nearby running for cover.
Deputies responded at about 2:56 p.m. in the 100 block of Grayson Street in Walterboro, where they located one person who was wounded and transported to Colleton County Medical Center, according to an incident report.
The victim is not being cooperative in the investigation, according to Colleton Sheriff's Lt. Amye Stivender said.
The shooting sent a woman who had just arrived home with her children next door to the scene running for cover with her family, the report states. The woman told deputies she quickly gathered her children and ran behind her home with them after hearing the first gunshot.
Witnesses reported seeing a silver-colored 4-door sedan pull up by a ditch across from the home where the victim was wounded, step out of the car into the ditch, and begin firing multiple shots. Deputies found approximately eight shell casings in the ditch where witnesses said the car had stopped, the report states.
One witness reported seeing two men running from the woman's yard and into a home next door, and then saw a vehicle arrive at that home and pick up the same two people, the report states. Deputies say one of the passengers was the man wounded in the shooting.
Deputies are trying to figure out a motive for the shooting and the investigation is ongoing, Stivender said.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Colleton County Sheriff's Office at (843) 869-1674 or Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111.
