East Cooper Community Outreach helps families in need for Thanksgiving

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - East Cooper Community Outreach in Mount Pleasant is making a difference for about 300 families during its turkey giveaway this year.

Cornell Williams has been a carpenter for 35 years.  Recently, he had two surgeries including open heart surgery.  Therefore, working has not been an option for him.

"I just had surgery a month ago and I had another surgery so I have not worked since July so it means a lot to be able to pick the turkey up.  It's been kind of rough for me and my wife with me not being able to work or do anything to help out. It feels down for me," Cornell said.

Cornell's main priority has been keeping the lights and water on at his home. Alana Morrall, a spokesperson for the organization, says this annual event helps helps hundreds of people around the Lowcountry every year.

"The holidays are especially stressful. This is important for us because we bring hope to so many families," Morrall said.

Williams calls it the hope his family needs at this time of the year.

Families who missed out on Friday's giveaway can still get food assistance at East Cooper Community Outreach at 1145 Six Mile Rd. in Mount Pleasant. The organization's hours are 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
