CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A judge denied bond Monday for a woman accused of kidnapping her daughter 20 years ago.

Prosecutors say Dorothy Barnett kidnapped her daughter, Savanna, in 1994 and took her to Australia. They argued Barnett is a flight risk, but defense attorney Russell Mace said she should be released and put on electronic monitoring.

The former Isle of Palms resident is accused of fleeing the country with her 10-month-old daughter, Savanna, when she did not have custody.

Federal officials say Barnett used fake identities to obtain passports and raised her daughter, for the next 20 years, primarily in Australia.

Barnett was arrested in Australia last November and spent nearly a year behind bars there, before being extradited back to Charleston in September.

Her appearance before a federal judge in Charleston on Sept. 29 was the first time in two decades she had been seen publicly on U.S. soil.
