Colleton Co. deputies recover more than $300K in stolen property

Over the past three weeks, Colleton County deputies say they have teamed up with other agencies across the Lowcountry to recover $300,000 worth of stolen property.

On Tuesday, deputies recovered a stolen mini-excavator and a John Deere tractor in a wooded area of Smoaks, with an estimated value of $45,000.

That recovery came a day after Colleton County deputies were assisted in executing a search warrant at a home in Smoaks by deputies from Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties, along with police officers from Hampton and Surfside and investigators from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, according to Colleton County Sheriff's Lt. Amye Stivender.

Investigators seized stolen property estimated at more than $150,000, including a truck tractor, farm equipment, ATVs, UTVs, trailers and vehicles, Stivender said. Authorities were led to the location by information about suspects in a Nov. 18 heavy equipment dealership burglary in which a $27,000 tractor was stolen. Hampton Police recovered the tractor, but not the suspects.

Another search warrant executed at an address on Cane Branch Road on Nov. 18 helped deputies and police recover $40,000 in jet skis, golf carts, mowers and trailers.

Colleton deputies and Walterboro police also recovered $25,000 of stolen property, including a truck tractor, tools and store merchandise, after executing a search warrant at an address on Cypress Drive on Nov. 14. Investigators were able to link a number of area burglaries to the location and recovered an additional estimated $30,000 in stolen property, within three days of the initial incident, Stivender said.
