COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials say a man died early Wednesday morning after being hit being by a train in Yemassee.

Officials say the victim was struck by a CSX freight train on Public Landing Lane around 4:02 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene told rescue crews the man got out of his pickup truck at the marked crossing and was attempting to touch the moving train when he was hit.

Authorities arrived shortly after the incident, but the victim was already dead due to multiple traumatic injuries, according to Fire-Rescue.

Officials say the crossing arms and warning lights were working at the time of the incident. CSX employees saw the accident happen, and stopped the train.

One "distraught" witness was transported to Colleton Medical Center for evaluation, despite no physical injuries, rescue officials say.

The victim has not yet been identified.

The accident is being investigated by the Colleton County Sheriff's Office and Coroner's Office.
