MUSC psychologist assisted in development of military sexual assault survey

Medical University of South Carolina officials say a psychologist at the hospital helped to develop a nationwide survey on sexual assault and harassment in the military.

According to Tony Ciuffo at MUSC, psychologist Dean Kilpatrick was hired to produce questions for the RAND National Defense Research Institute.

The RAND Corporation had been asked by the Department of Defense's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office to conduct an independent assessment of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination in the military.

The survey included 560,000 US service members in August and September in 2014.

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel cited the data which included an increase in reporting, and added that the military had "a long way to go."
