Transportation Commission OKs SC road needs plan

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

The South Carolina Transportation Commission has given final approval to a plan outlining the state's transportation needs for the next quarter century.

The Statewide Multimodal Transportation Plan was approved at last week's commission meeting in Columbia. The plan was the topic of public hearings earlier this year

The plan projects that by 2040, the state will need to spend another $70 billion on transportation - about $60 billion of that on roads.

The Department of Transportation said in a release that with current revenue projections of only $28 billion, the state will be about $1.5 billion short each year.

Commission Chairman W.B. Cook says the commission will discuss how to get the money needed for the plan and he says the study can't be allowed stay on a shelf.
