Hundreds of holiday food baskets distributed to Lowcountry families
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Holiday food baskets are to be distributed to hundreds of families in seven counties in the South Carolina Lowcountry and Midlands.
Both employees and those who are retired from South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. are filling the baskets in Charleston on Tuesday and then spreading out across the Lowcountry to distribute the holiday cheer.
In all, 275 baskets are being distributed to needy families in Charleston, Dorchester, and Colleton counties as well as in Beaufort, Jasper, Orangeburg and Hampton counties.
Families with children who are younger than 14 are also receiving toys along with the food baskets.
"All the toys that we're going to be donating today have been bought by the SCE&G employees and wrapped by SCE&G employees and retirees too," said Kim Asbill with SCE&G. "We've got a whole group of those folks. So, we're all in this together and really the season is so great. It's about giving back and we want to give back to our communities that we serve."
