Clyburn: SC State still has chance to use $13M from feds

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - U.S. Rep Jim Clyburn says financially troubled South Carolina State University can still use $13 million in federal money he secured a decade ago, but must move quickly or risk losing the money.

The Democratic lawmaker tells The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that money he secured for a transportation center is still available but the university must develop plans for using it.

Clyburn says nearly $3 million could be used for transportation and safety projects such as drainage, curbing and lighting but a plan must be submitted to the Department of Transportation. The rest of the $13 million requires a $2 million state match and also a plan for using it.

Clyburn warns if the university doesn't submit plans by Jan. 15, it risks losing the federal funds.
