Former NCPD community service officer gets 25 years for assaulting teens

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A former North Charleston Police Department community service officer was sentenced to 25 years in jail for assaulting five teenagers.

Prosecutors in Dorchester County say 22-year-old Salvatore Maniche of North Charleston pleaded guilty on Tuesday to five counts of first-degree assault and battery.

According to Assistant Solicitor Glenn Justis, from 2010 to 2012 Maniche dated five separate young females. Prosecutors say while dating each female, he became aggressive towards them and forced them to have sexual relations against their will.

According to victim statements, Maniche would choke and hit the victims along with forcing them to have sexual intercourse. Court documents state that all the victims ranged in age from 16 to 18-years-old.

Maniche's acts were reported to authorities after a teacher at a local high school observed bruises on one of the young female victims and notified law enforcement.

Detective Dwayne Peters of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office was assigned the case, and through his investigation identified four more victims.

Prosecutors say all five victims recounted identical behavior during their time dating Maniche.

According to investigators, there were five instances where Maniche choked the victim to the point that one of the victims lost consciousness. In one incident, an affidavit states that when one of the victims gave a knife to Maniche for his birthday, he said, "I wonder how sharp this is."

Court documents state Maniche then used the knife to cut the victim on the leg.

Maniche was also accused of pointing an Airsoft gun, which the victim thought to be real, at the victim and shooting her in the leg with a pellet.

Affidavits state Maniche also grabbed a knife and held it against a victim's neck. Authorities say Maniche then asked her if she was scared and told her not to move because he could accidentally cut her.

Judge Murphy listened to the facts presented by prosecutors and heard from several of the victims in the case before accepting Maniche's plea and handing down the 25 year active sentence with 5 years of probation to follow his release.

In addition to the sentence, Judge Murphy required Maniche to be entered into the sex offender registry for the remainder of his life.

Officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office say at the time their department charged Maniche in March of 2013, Maniche was working as a North Charleston Police Department community service officer, a role which provides limited roadside service to motorists, aid with directing traffic, completes minor accident reports and answer phone calls.
