Last minute shoppers rush to tri-county stores

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - With only two days left before Christmas people are still finishing up shopping here in the tri-county.

"We kind of did a little bit but this is the last minute crunch just grabbing a few things," Lisa Cattles, who was shopping at Northwoods Shopping Center said.

Many others have much more work to do.

"I just started," Andy Canaday, another holiday shopper said. "I'm always a last minute shopper. I hate Christmas shopping. I hate the crowds; the malls, the stores."

"I'm doing a lot of shopping today but I've got a lot of kids and they all like electronics, so I knocked out probably 90 percent of it," Brian Cradock, who just started shopping today said. "That's how I am. I always wait to the last minute. It's more fun. Get out there. Mix it up. Hustle and bustle."

According to the National Retail Federation, only 53 percent of people had finished their shopping as of December 10th and for stores, the large number of last minute shoppers isn't a holiday miracle but it's unexpected.

"It's actually been a really pleasant surprise," Frank Siglin, the general manger at Best Buy in North Charleston said. "We've had a really great holiday season not just here but in the surrounding stores."

For Best Buy, online shopping has kept some of the lines shorter.

"It continues to grow every year," Siglin said. "You place an order in California, it might even get shipped from my store here in Charleston.
