CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Five more people have died from the flu virus in the last week, according to new numbers released by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
DHEC says that brings the total number of flu deaths in our state to 20 for the year.
Charleston area hospitals and clinics say they are seeing an increase in the number of flu cases.
.A spokeswoman for Roper St. Francis Hospitals says since November 1, the hospitals combined have treated 1,073 flu cases.
She says they saw a huge increase on December 21 and had 232 cases just in the last week.
MUSC says since November first, the hospital has seen more than 100 cases of flu.
Trident Medical Center is also seeing a higher than normal number of flu cases.
The CEO for Health First clinics says since December 1, more than 1,000 people have been treated for the flu at their facilities.
We are told most of the flu cases are type "A" which can be resistant to the flu shot.
