CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - People lined the streets of downtown Charleston Thursday to mark the 152nd anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
A parade started at Burke High School and ended with a service at Calvary Baptist Church. The parade featured floats, bands and trucks of people wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. In it, he declared that all persons held as slaves within the Confederate states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
