NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The final day of the week-long Kwanzaa celebration ended in North Charleston Thursday with a feast and festive music.

The seven-day annual event ends on New Year's Day, allowing participants to celebrate the end of a holiday and the beginning of a new year.

The family event featured  an essay contest and arts and crafts activities for kids.

Kwanzaa was founded 48 years ago as a celebration of African heritage to celebrate seven core principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
