Ahead of freezing temps, plumbing expert shares tips to save your pipes, pocketbook

NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - As the Lowcountry prepares for the first big chill of 2015, North Charleston plumbing experts say following a few simple steps today could save you from a costly fix later.

Chris DiCampli, owner of Preferred Home Services, a plumbing and heating and air service in North Charleston, says the biggest mistake most homeowners make is simply failing to prepare before cold weather hits.

He suggests finding at least one faucet inside your home to leave running using a slow steady stream.  This should be done during the coldest point in the day, usually overnight or early in the morning.

DiCampli says the continual running water is much harder to freeze.

While the costs to repair a broken pipe varies with size and complexity, he says even a simple fix can cost nearly one hundred dollars.

Outdoors, homeowners are encouraged to insulate any exposed pipes, while also disconnecting water hoses, and making sure outdoor water sources are turned off.

Consult with your local hardware store for the proper insulation, which usually costs less than ten dollars for most pipes.
