CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, along with officials from The Medical University of South Carolina, announced the launch of a new program geared toward promoting healthy workplaces throughout the city.

The Charleston Healthy Business Challenge, which kicks off January 30th, focuses on four pillars of worksite wellness, which include healthy eating, active living, tobacco-free worksites, and stress management.

Participants register online at www.chbchallenge.com, where they'll have access to the Charleston Healthy Business Challenge scorecard, and will receive points in each of the preceding categories.

"Healthy places equal healthy people," said Dr. Susan Johnson, the Director of Health Promotion at MUSC.

"It certainly will help businesses succeed if their employees are healthy."

Johnson is working with the city to make Charleston not only one of the top tourists locations in the world, but also, one of the best places to live.

"It's the indirect costs, its productivity, it's employee engagement.  All those things have a significant impact on the bottom line for a company."

The Charleston Healthy Business Challenge is free, voluntary, and open to all businesses in the Charleston metro area.
