COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republican Gov. Nikki Haley begins her second term with a swearing-in ceremony on the Statehouse steps amid near-freezing temperatures.
The Bamberg County native made history four years ago as the first woman and first minority to become South Carolina's governor. Her second inaugural ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by retired Marine Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, who received the nation's highest military honor last June. The Afghanistan veteran is a University of South Carolina student.
The National Anthem will be sung by Candice Glover, the 2013 "American Idol" winner. Haley publicly congratulated the Beaufort County native in her fourth annual State of the State address last January.
Participating choirs include one from River Bluff High School, which Haley's daughter attends.
