SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - At least 25 homes have been targeted by burglars in Summerville in the last two months, according to police.
Investigators say most of the break-ins have occurred in the daytime with either the front or back doors being kicked in. Police say the thieves are making sure no one is home, and in some cases, if someone answers the door, they ask if the homeowner needs his or her lawn cut.
"We're in the middle of winter here, no one wants their lawn cut," Summerville Police Captain Jon Rogers said.
Victims report they are missing jewelry, money, guns and in one incident report a man stated several high school and college football championship rings had been stolen.
The thieves broke into David Allsbrooks' shed in his backyard.
"It just seems to be a bunch of thugs and predators wandering around, doing what they want to do," Allsbrooks said. "The people are just very brazen. They don't seem to want to stop."
Police say the neighborhoods targeted include Old Town, Weatherstone, Gahagan, and the Bridges.
Investigators say it's possible the same people may be responsible for the series of break-ins.
